A pictorial
history of the North Yorkshire & Cleveland Railway
The North Yorkshire & Cleveland Railway Company's line from Picton
Junction to Grosmont was started in 1856 and completed by the North
Eastern Railway in 1865.
The line was built to tap into the anticipated ironstone trade on
and around the Ingleby Estate in the North Yorkshire Moors. After
it was absorbed into the NER, the line became and important link between
the mines at Rosedale and ironworks in Durham.
This site is reminder of the extensive railway operations at Battersby
Junction, some of the small country stations en-route and a few of
the characters along the line. The Picture
Galleries contain many old photographs. Some have never been published
before. |
