Jimmy Cartmell was one of the Development squad first introduced to the supporters during the Cardiff friendly on the 22nd of November 1998 and along with fellow up and coming player Hugh Vyvyan scored his first try. Less than one month after his first appearance he was selected to play his league debut against Sale in front of a home crowd of 3,020.

His debut was made possible after Richard Arnold was suspended for one match after collecting 3 white triangles in previous games.

The match was brilliant and the Falcons home supporters lifted the squad to a 35-15 win over the Manchester side. The next time he scored for the Falcons was during the Bedford home game in early January, then again one match later against Sale in the away fixture.

Jimmy is at present a student at Newcastle University and was part of the Universities RFC 1st XV. Before moving to Newcastle he played for the Cumbrian side of Wigton (where he began as a mini-player at the age of nine) and the Cumbria team that beat Somerset 21-13 in the CIS County Championship at Twickenham in 1997. He was educated at Austin Friars, Carlisle, represented Cumbria Schools at all levels and the North 18-Group. Also playing for the University Club, Auckland, New Zealand he is now an economics and accountancy student at Newcastle Uni.

During the 1998/9 season Jim started 15 games for Newcastle, scoring five tries.
